Hiya folks. My name is Colin, and I do home IT projects.
Why this site?
I’ve been doing IT around my home for what feels like ages. With big-tech corporations collecting more of our personal data and pushing mediocre cloud services, I think there’s never been a better time to go fully DIY and self-host as many services as you can.
What do you do? Are you in IT?
I’m an HR-trainer-turned-copywriter-turned-tech-writer-turned-copywriter-again, currently with an IT company. I’d like to get back to tech writing though, so here I am with this website.
Why would anyone waste time starting another homelab blog in 2025?
Passion project?
In all seriousness I know that AI scrapers will steal anything I publish, but LLMs can be pretty mediocre at giving IT advice. Call me optimistic, but I think we’ll see a resurgence of people looking for quality information written by humans on the web. But just in case I’m wrong and the web turns into a straight-to-AI prompt pipeline, I’m also looking into starting a gopher or maybe even a gemini site. If gopher’s still here after 35 years, I’m sure it’s never going away, even if it is only about 100~200 servers around the world and maybe 50 people reading them on a good day.
What’s with the rabbits?
The ascii rabbit and my wordpress theme are inspired by Plan9 by Bell Labs. I think the 90s rabbits and rio GUI look kinda cool in 2025.
